In the ORDINANCE TO TAME TELECAST BULLIES, the centre has surprisingly acted in the interest of the common men on the telecast / broadcasting of popular sporting events in times of neo-globalisation and wanton Liberalisation sweeping across the board. Although the commercial considerations of the Doordarshan seem to have prompted the government to promulgate this ordinance post haste without much public debate on the subject, this will be in the larger interest of the tax-payers of this country.
As a patroniser of the sports the state has a special right over the sports channels that have no special love for the sports. For these private sports channels, sports is a means to earn revenue and more revenue. The sports events like Cricket, Tennis, World Cups, etc are mere opportunities for increasing their bottom line and the top line. Given this, these private broadcasters have a moral obligation to share the so-called exclusive telecast rights with the state-run Broadcasters notwithstanding the anachronism in this view point in these days of Liberalisation. From this point of view, the move of the government to compel the exclusive right holders who beam the signals into the country on commercial basis is in the right direction. This should have been done long long ago. However, the ordinance will be welcomed by both the sports aficionados and the tax-paying citizens.
