PANDEMONIUM IN PARLIAMENT

The nation has been mutely witnessing some below-the-dignity-scenes ad nauseum inside the parliament for quite some time. It is unfortunate and regrettable that our responsible and erudite parliamentarians should behave in such a fashion which would put even the street urchins to shame.

What is more dismaying is the astronomical price the poor citizens of the republic have to pay for watching this drama ad infinitum. As per a conservative figure the approximate expenditure for one day session of the Lok Sabha is Rs 12.30 million. Who is footing this huge bill? The answer is as simple as asking what is twelve twelves are: the citizens of this great democracy.

In a democracy, the parliament is considered as the sanctum sanctorum of the democracy and the people’s elected representatives its dedicated soldiers. The legislature is enjoined to legislate and conduct informed and healthy political debate for finding political solutions to the burning issues of the voters through a political consensus and convergent views. Unfortunately, what is happening, of late, is colossal waste of precious time of the Parliament by some one or other for some cause or other.

This must come to an end in the interest of the nation. Since the business of both the houses is telecast live and open to the public eyes and scrutiny, the onus on the MPs to conduct themselves responsibly and purposefully before and behind the camera is more. If the pandemonium is not arrested sooner rather than later, the credibility and the image of our MPs will get further sullied. This is neither advisable nor healthy for the fledgling democracy.
