The nation has been mutely witnessing some below-the-dignity-scenes ad nauseum inside the parliament for quite some time. It is unfortunate and regrettable that our responsible and erudite parliamentarians should behave in such a fashion which would put even the street urchins to shame.
What is more dismaying is the astronomical price the poor citizens of the republic have to pay for watching this drama ad infinitum. As per a conservative figure the approximate expenditure for one day session of the Lok Sabha is Rs 12.30 million. Who is footing this huge bill? The answer is as simple as asking what is twelve twelves are: the citizens of this great democracy.
In a democracy, the parliament is considered as the sanctum sanctorum of the democracy and the people’s elected representatives its dedicated soldiers. The legislature is enjoined to legislate and conduct informed and healthy political debate for finding political solutions to the burning issues of the voters through a political consensus and convergent views. Unfortunately, what is happening, of late, is colossal waste of precious time of the Parliament by some one or other for some cause or other.
This must come to an end in the interest of the nation. Since the business of both the houses is telecast live and open to the public eyes and scrutiny, the onus on the MPs to conduct themselves responsibly and purposefully before and behind the camera is more. If the pandemonium is not arrested sooner rather than later, the credibility and the image of our MPs will get further sullied. This is neither advisable nor healthy for the fledgling democracy.

Unruly behaviour by the Members of Parliament, especially in the Lok-Sabha has become a regular affair. Logically, this is expected and will grow in the coming years. With a large chunk of our MPs having criminal records, what more can we expect.
A good number of MPs, MLAs, MLCs and scores of politicians at the local level are involved in notorious criminal activities like murder, attempt to murder, rape, molestation, kidnapping for ranson etc. etc. It is disconcerning to mention that the charges filed against these politicians are kept pending in the local courts for years together and finally they are acquitted. We have rarely heard of any politician being convicted for corruption. Most of our politicians have wealth disproportionate to their known source of income. India is not a democratic country as on today. Close to the final figure, our elected representatives make to their position by muscle and money power. The average voting percentage in any general elections is between 50% - 55%. Close to 80% of the educated and the intellectual class rarely cast their votes. More than 20% of the population in urban and suburban areas find their names missing from the voters` list. Untill and unless these isues are redresed, we have to accept the street- urchin like behaviours of our MPs and MLAs.
It is ridiculous of democracy that we entrust the law making responsibility to such criminals. A good moral character, clean police record and a high level of integrity is mandatory for any Indian citizen to join the Government service irrespective of the class of post. They are subjected to thorough character verification by the police administration. Even a small suppression of facts in their declaration forms or conviction for petty crimes gets them blacklisted for entry in Government service. But our Law Makers are never subjected to such scrutiny. On the contrary, they are welcomed with criminal records.
