In declaring October Second of every year, which is Gandhi Jayanti, as the International Day of Non-violence the United Nations has at last done some justice to one of the greatest men the world has ever produced. In fact, being a symbol of hope and conscience of the world, Gandhiji deserved a better treatment. The UN and the Nobel Prize Committee had committed a grave gaffe in not honouring the Great Apostle of Peace in the past. At last, the UN will be able to exorcise of its ignominy of mercilessly turning its back on a great personality merely because he was born in the Asian sub-continent. This will also redeem the UN of the allegations of its overt tilt towards anything western and bias against the South.
The India Government also deserves to be complimented for securing the support of 142 countries out of the 191 member nations to cosponsor the India-tabled Resolution. This underscores the relevance of Non-violence in today’s world in the backdrop of increasing violence and aggression. The indomitable spirit non-violence as popularised by Mahatma Gandhi has not yet lost its influence and utility for the world facing unprecedented ethnic and religious violence.
Sadly, Gandhiji has few takers back at home thanks to the failure of his political inheritors and ideological followers. Some people who feigned to be his true followers and who professed to be the torch-bearers of Gandhism, openly made a mockery of the very ideals he had cherished and put to practice in real life during his life-time. This has distanced the younger generation from his path which are otherwise insipid for the dynamic Yuppies. The Gandhian thoughts could not hold its sway over the Indians as much as it has in the foreign lands. To breathe fresh life into his ideology a Bollywood pot-boiler was required. Apart from rekindling the interest of the youth cutting across the country in the interest in non-violence the movie could encourage them to seek more and more information on Gandhiji and dissuade the wrong-doers from doing so emulating Gandhigiri in a way of life imitating the art.
If the UN succeeds in changing the mind-set of at least a few militants and the mercenaries thanks to observing the Non-Violence Day as has been decided by the UN this will promote the ideals for which the great person lived and laid down his life at the altar of hatred and violence.

To hell with Gandhian principles. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi`s involvement in Indian political freedom has been a curse on the Indian Subcontinent. The side-tracking of Subhashchandra Bose and his likes from the forefront of Indian freedom struggle has changed the political equations of India. Had we won freedom under the leadership of Subhashchandra Bose or any followers of his thinking, the political map of India would have been different. Preaching of peace and non-violence has been more detrimental to India as a political force. If we look at Indian History, the deterioration of India as a global force started since the reign of Emperor Ashoka. A nation well equipped with arms and ammunitions, with a strong army of fearless soldiers moves to preach peace and non-violence, commands its due respect. A weaponless mass preaching peace is nothing but cowardice. The principles of Subhashchandra Bose, Auronbindo Nandi, Bhagat Singh, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and their tribes, had it influenced the Indian masses, the Indian subcontinent today would have been a force to reckon with. But we were under a spell of curse.
It is mockery to say that India won freedom with the principles of non-violence preached by M.K. Gandhi. The loss of innocent lives, the disrespect to the womenfolk, the loss of self respect, the trauma of separation from one`s birth place, the loss of property, bussiness and livelihood arising out of the division of India, will not be forgotten by a patriotic Indian.
M.K. Gandhi tried to be saint among the politicians and a politician among the saints, and this has cost the nation drastically.
To add more shame to the nation, we have a chapter called `Directive Principles of State Policy`(DPSP) in the Indian constitution. Does the Government of India or any State Government in India give even a scant regard to this chapter in the Indian Constitution ? We have the largest number of sexual exploitations, we as a nation contribute the largest number of criminals to frame legislation for us. All kinds of activities exactly opposite to the (DPSP)are openly practiced under the State`s patronage. Do we still want to talk about Gandhism.
We want India to be known as a nation of the most fearless soldiers, a nation well armed to retaliate any adventurism by an enemy, a nation where human values are divine, a nation politically vibrant to preserve peace and human dignity.
