Musharraf And Musharraf
Finally, the self-styled General of Pakistan has chosen to step down rather than clinging to the chair he had himself put up in a clear case of caving in before the aggressive postures of both his political adversaries and the Talibanised sections. After double-crossing the Bush administration for a pretty long time in its so-called War Against terror, the General finds himself in an unenviable position having been unmercifully jettisoned by the very Bush Administration. For the General, attempting to run with the hare and hunting with the hound became too adventurous and excruciating. Moreover, the strain in this event-based relationship was increasingly under pressure owing to the internal conflict in the relation and the snowballing opprobrium at home against the General. For the Bush administration, the General has outlived his utility after his sagging public image at home.
Fortunately, Musharraf departs in a bloodless political coup of sorts, albeit unceremoniously, much the same way as he had usurped power in a bloodless coup way back in 1999. The political stooges put up by the US were always the victim of their own making everywhere every time. The same Nemesis came to haunt the vulnerable General in a similar fashion.
It is speculated that only a tactical move or a safe passage the US must have assured to the General can save him from further ignominy and damage to his life and property. But, it can surely be said that the self-proclaimed progressive regime which has extracted the best material and political support from the Bush administration for the dangerously Talibanised country seems to have been self-defeated. The coming days may be more tumultuous and tempestuous for the whole south-Asia.
